America has always been Caleb’s dream education destination and after leaping over a few hurdles, he finally set foot in the University of Lincoln-Nebraska in 2002, where he pursued a degree in Broadcast Journalism. His essay entry for the ISO (International Student Organisation) Essay Competition 2002 won him 3rd Place, having competed against international students from across America. Unfortunately, his dream was cut short after 2 years when a financial crisis hit his family. He returned disappointed and frustrated and was lost about what to do next.
He started all over again at Monash Sunway in 2004 and it was during this time that he took up teaching English part-time at a tuition center to supplement his living expenses. After a year, he realised he had an undiscovered passion for education. So, he gave up pursuing a journalism degree and in 2006, he completed a Diploma in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) with Distinction, awarded by London Teacher Training College, UK.
Since then, he has taught students from primary, to secondary, and even working adults in company offices. He taught at three different tuition centers in Klang and Shah Alam, then managed his own LIFE Center in Klang for 7 years, and most recently worked as a teacher in Sri Emas International School, PJ, where he taught English (Y5 – Y11), Social Intelligence (Y7 & Y10), and assisted in Global Perspectives (Y10 & Y11).
His journey as an educator encompasses teaching PMR, PT3, SPM, UEC, MUET, IGCSE, and PSLE (Singapore) over 20 years, and along the way, he has added cooking and copywriting to his skillset. Though he is happy to see his students achieve good results in exams, he is happier seeing them grow up to become successful and happy in life as adults. To him, being a good student is important, but it is more important to be a good person. After 20 years, he continues to maintain lifelong friendships with many of his students, some of whom are now married with kids.
For Caleb, teaching is a calling, a responsibility, and a way of giving back to society.
